JetLite, formerly Air Sahara, is an airline based in New Delhi, India. Controlled by Jet Airways, the airline operates scheduled services connecting metropolitan centres in India. The airline also provides helicopters which are available for charter services and aerial photography. Its main base is Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, with hubs at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad, Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai. The focus cities are Chennai International Airport, Chennai, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport,Ahmedabad and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata.

The airline was established on 20 September 1991 and began operations on 3 December 1993 with two Boeing 737-200 aircraft as Sahara Airlines. Initially, services were primarily concentrated in the northern sectors of India, keeping Delhi as its base, and then operations were extended to cover all the country. Sahara Airlines was re-branded as Air Sahara on 2 October 2000, although Sahara Airlines remains the carrier’s registered name. On 22 March 2004 it became an international carrier with the start of flights from Chennai to Colombo. It is part of the major Sahara India Pariwar business conglomerate. The uncertainty over the airline’s fate caused its share of the domestic Indian air transport market go down from approximately 11% in January 2006 to a reported 8.5% in April.

Jet Airways announced its first takeover attempt on January 19, 2006, offering US$500 million (2000 crore) in cash for the airline. Market reaction to the deal was mixed, with many analysts suggesting that Jet Airways was paying too much for Air Sahara. The Indian Civil Aviation Ministry gave approval in principle, but the deal was eventually called off over disagreements over price and the appointment of Jet chairman Naresh Goyal to the Air Sahara board. Following the failure of the deal, the companies filed lawsuits seeking damages from each other.
A second, eventually successful attempt was made on April 12, 2007 with Jet Airways agreeing to pay 1,450 crore rupees ($340 million). The deal gave Jet a combined domestic market share of about 32%.
On April 16th Jet Airways announced that Air Sahara will be renamed as JetLite. The takeover was officially completed on April 20th, when Jet Airways paid Rs. 400 crore.

Fleet: Jet Lite (as of Decmber, 2008) operates a fleet of 24 aircraft, which includes 17 Boeing 737 series(B737-300, B737-400, B737-700, B737-800, B737-800W) and 7 Canadian Regional Jets 200 Series(CRJ-200). Jet Lite operates 141 flights every day to 30 domestic destinations and 2 international destinations (Kathmandu and Colombo).

JetLite, (as of December, 2008) connects 26 domestic and 2 international destinations with over 108 flights a day:
It operates 218 flights a day and has a network of 38 destinations, with regional and long-haul international services. Its main bases are Bengaluru International Airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and Indira Gandhi International Airport. Kingfisher Airlines, through one of its holding companies United Breweries Group, has 50% stake in low-cost carrier Kingfisher Red, formerly known as Air Deccan.
Kingfisher is one of six airlines in the world to have a five-star rating from Skytrax, along with Asiana Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airways. According to a survey held in September 2008, Kingfisher was the most admired airline brand in the Asia-Pacific region. In July 2008, Kingfisher’s share of Indian aviation market stood at 14.3% while its sister carrier Air Deccan’s share stood at 13.5%.

On September 3, 2008 Kingfisher airline began its international operations by connecting Bangalore to London Heathrow. The airline also hopes to start flights to other international destinations in the future, like the US with Airbus A340-500 and Airbus A380-800 aircrafts.

In September 2008, Kingfisher announced its plans to raise US$100 million through equity.

Kingfisher chairman Vijay Mallya and his Jet Airways counterpart Naresh Goyal announced the alliance after a marathon meeting on 13th October 2008 at Mumbai, India. The alliance includes code-sharing on both domestic and international flights, joint fuel management to reduce expenses, common ground handling, joint utilisation of crew and sharing of similar frequent flier programmes.

Kingfisher Red, formerly known as Simplifly Deccan and previously as Air Deccan, is an airline based in Bangalore, India. It is India’s first low-cost carrier and is now a subsidiary of Kingfisher Airlines. The Bengaluru International Airport serves as the airline’s primary hub.

Formerly known as Air Deccan the airline is operated by Deccan Aviation. It was started by Captain G. R. Gopinath and its first flight was launched on 23 August 2003 from Bangalore to Hubballi. It was known popularly as the common man’s airlines, with is logo showing two palms joining together. The dream of Captain Gopinath was to enable “every Indian to fly at least once in his/her lifetime.” Air Deccan was the first airline in India to fly to second tier cities like Hubballi, Mangalore, Madurai and Visakhapatnam from metropolitan areas like Bangalore and Chennai.
On 25 January 2006, Deccan filed a red herring prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Deccan planned to offload 25% of its stake in the initial public offering (IPO) planned for late March or early April. 24.5 million equity shares of ten rupees each were to be divested at a price to be announced later to raise Rs Cr ($250-300 million). The proceed from the IPO was to be used to set up a training centre in Bangalore and a maintenance facility in Chennai. However, due to stock market downturn, Air Deccan’s IPO barely managed to scrape through (after extending the issue closing date), but it was a flop on listing. Its shares were listed at a discount of about 50 per cent to the issue price of Rs 148.65.

The airline had switched to US-based airline reservations hosting service provider Radixx International, becoming the second major domestic Indian carrier to switch to the Radixx Air Enterprise system. GoAir is the first Indian Domestic carrier using Radixx reservation system. Before moving to radixx reservation system, Deccan was using reservation system provided by Delhi based company, Interglobe Technologies.

On 19 December 2007 Air Deccan and Kingfisher Airlines decided to merge, following which Deccan Aviation was renamed ‘Kingfisher Red’. The merger was effective April 2008, with Vijay Mallya serving as the Chairman and CEO of the new company, while Capt. G. R. Gopinath as its vice-chairman. The move also allowed Kingfisher to bypass the 5-year wait to fly to international destinations. It is believed that Deccan will fly to the Gulf and Southeast Asia, while Kingfisher will serve Europe and North America.
The company is currently owned by Deccan Aviation (~52%) and the United Breweries Group (~46%).

Fleet: The Kingfisher Red fleet consists the following aircraft (as of August 2008): ATR 42, ATR 72, Airbus A320-232

GoAir launched its operations in November 2005. GoAir, a low-fare carrier launched with the objective of commoditising air travel, offers airline seats at marginal premium to train fares across India. The airline (as of December 2008) operates across 11 destinations through 561 weekly flights.

Go Air is a low-cost airline based in Mumbai, India. It operates domestic passenger services to 11 cities with 385 weekly flights. Its main base is Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai.

Jet Airways was incorporated as an air taxi operator on 1 April 1992. It started commercial airline operations on 5 May 1993 with a fleet of 4 Boeing 737-300 aircraft. In January 1994, a change in the law enabled Jet Airways to apply for scheduled airline status, which was granted on 4 January 1995. It began international operations to Sri Lanka in March 2004. While the company is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 80% of its stock is controlled by Naresh Goyal (through his ownership of Jet’s parent company, Tailwinds, and has 10,017 employees (as on March 2007).
Naresh Goyal, who already owned Jetair (Private) Limited, which provided sales and marketing for foreign airlines in India, set up Jet Airways as a full-service scheduled airline to compete against state-owned Indian Airlines. Indian Airlines had enjoyed a monopoly in the domestic market between 1953, (when all major Indian air transport providers were nationalised under the Air Corporations Act – 1953), and January 1994, when the Air Corporations Act was repealed, following which Jet Airways received scheduled airline status.

Jet Airways and Air Sahara were the only private airlines to survive the Indian business downturn of the early 1990s. In January 2006, Jet Airways announced that it would buy Air Sahara for US$500 million in an all-cash deal, making it the biggest takeover in Indian aviation history. The resulting airline would have been the country’s largest but the deal fell through in June 2006.
On 12 April 2007, Jet Airways agreed to buy out Air Sahara for 14.5 billion rupees (US$340 million). Air Sahara was renamed JetLite, and was marketed between a low-cost carrier and a full service airline. In August 2008, Jet Airways announced its plans to completely integrate JetLite into Jet Airways.

Jet Airways serves 64 destinations by itself and 22 destinations across the world through Code Sharing. In addition to destinations across India and other parts of the Indian subcontinent (Colombo, Dhaka, Kathmandu), Jet Airways expanded international operations to include destinations in Asia (Bangkok, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai [ending January 13, 2009], Singapore), Europe (Brussels, London), the Middle East (Abu Dhabi, Dubai , Bahrain, Doha, Kuwait, Muscat) and North America (New York, Newark, San Francisco [ending January 13, 2009], Toronto). By July 2007, it was connecting India with over 50 international destinations.
Jet Airways operates a scissors-hub in Brussels, with four Indian cities (Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai) connected to three North American cities (New York, Newark, Toronto).
Citing the economical downturn of 2008, Jet Airways will suspend the Brussels-Bengalore route as from January 12th 2009, and reduce the capacity on the Mumbai-Brussels-Newark route by replacing its flagship Boeing 777-300ER to an Airbus A330-200 as from January 21st 2009.
Jet Airways will end service to Shanghai, China and San Francisco on January 13, 2009.

SpiceJet is a low-cost airline based in New Delhi, India. It began service in May 2005 and by 2008, it was India’s second-largest low-cost airline in terms of market share. SpiceJet was earlier known as Royal Airways, a reincarnation of ModiLuft. It is promoted by the Kansagra family.
SpiceJet marked its entry in service with Rs. 99 fares for the first 99 days, with 9000 seats available at this rate.
This deal was followed by a Rs. 999 promotional scheme on select routes.

SpiceJet was voted as the best low-cost airline in South Asia and Central Asia region by Skytrax in 2007. Rising fuel costs and increasing competition resulted in SpiceJet posting a loss in the first quarter of 2008-09. In August 2008, SpiceJet announced plans to raise US$100 million through foreign investment.

On July 15, 2008 Billionaire Wilbur Ross suggested he would invest $80 million (about Rs 345 crore) in the low cost airline. The board of directors of SpiceJet accepted an offer in-principle from the US-based PE firm that would make available about Rs 345 crore to SpiceJet, a joint statement issued by SpiceJet and WL Ross & Co.

SpiceJet’s new generation fleet of aircraft is backed by cutting edge technology and infrastructure to ensure the highest standards in operating efficiency. It has maintenance support and state of the art technology from world leaders like KLM, Star Navigation, Russel Adams and Tech Log. Spice Jet currently flies to 11 destinations. These include: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Jammu, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, and Srinagar.

Spicejet operate scheduled flights to the following domestic destinations (as of December 2008):

Ahmedabad

Bagdogra

Bangalore

Chennai

Coimbatore

Delhi

Goa

Guwahati

Hyderabad

Jammu

Kolkata

Mumbai

Pune

Srinagar

Varanasi

Vizag

Fleet: SpiceJet has chosen a single-aircraft-type fleet, which allows for greater efficiency in maintenance, and supports the low-cost structure. The airline has opted for the new-generation Boeing 737-800s with winglets and Boeing 737-900ER. These aircraft allow for safe, comfortable and efficient flying and are ideally suited for short to medium-haul flights in Indian conditions.
